Briefing of China Import & Export Toys in 2006(Part I)
  Summary

After sustained development, the structure of China toy industry is becoming more rational, and the ability of innovation has substantially increased. In 2006, exports totaled 17.76 billion U.S. dollars, an increase of 16.7% compared with the year of 2005; imports totaled 429 million U.S. dollars, with a growth of 37.83%. Furthermore, exported toys totaled 3.599 billion U.S. dollars of general trade, accounting for 20.26% of total exports, with a decrease of 0.35 percentage points compared with the same period in 2005.

The Exported Commodity Structure Analysis:

■ The fastest-growing category:

· The exports of “other construction sets and constructional toys” were 12.243 million U.S. dollars with an increase of 129.2%, ranking the first.

· Followed category is “other toys, put up in sets or outfits”. It totaled 308 million U.S. dollars, with an increase of 36.2%.
· “Wheeled toys designed to be ridden by children; dolls' carriages” amounted to 356 million U.S. dollars, accounting 31.8% of the exports, ranking the third.

■ The first three largest amounts of exported categories (excluding other toys) are “Video games used with a television receiver”, “other video games” and “stuffed toys representing animals or non-human creatures”. They respectively totaled 5.077 billion U.S. dollars, 3.146 billion U.S. dollars and 1.605 billion U.S. dollars, accounting for 28.59%, 17.71% and 9.04% of total exports.

4 Foreign Banks Allowed to Do Business in China
 

Citibank of the United States, the British HSBC Bank, the British Standard Chartered Bank and Hong Kong's Bank of East Asia have been allowed to open for business in China. They have obtained the right to become fully operational in the Yuan business. These four foreign capital banks will begin to fully enjoy the "national treatment" between Chinese and foreign-funded banks.

China Stores Set New Records in 2006
 

According to statistics published by the Commercial Reform and Development Department under the Ministry of Commerce and the China Chain Store and Franchise Association, sales revenue of China's top 100 chain stores totaled RMB 855.2 billion in 2006, up 25% year-on-year and exceeding the 13.7% rise in China's total consumer goods sales. There were 69,100 chain store outlets in the country, employing 2.04 million people, up 31% year-on-year.

Measures on Containing Pollution by Electronic Products
 

The Administrative Measures on the Control of Pollution by Electronic Information Products went into force in March this year. The measures apply to the production, sale and import of electronic information products in China in order to control and reduce environmental pollution and other public hazards caused by such products.

According to the measures, the manufacturer or importer should:

· Determine the "environmentally safe period" of their electronic information products and mark the date on the product.
· Mark the toxic and hazardous substances or elements contained in their electronic information products put up on sale in the market, clearly stating the name and amount of the toxic and hazardous substances or elements, where they are located and whether they are recyclable.
· Use non-toxic, non-hazardous, degradable and recyclable materials in packaging products and mark the description of the packaging materials on the product packaging.

China to More Effectively Protect IPR
  To continue to protect intellectual property rights (IPR), Chinese government will further improve the IPR protection system and strengthen law enforcement, and enhance cooperation with the international society.

China's national strategy on IPR protection will come out in the first half of this year. It is composed of 20 topics and one guideline, covering system building, law enforcement, talents training and public awareness regarding the IPR protection.

Chinese government believes that IPR protection is in the long-term interests of China and is also the country's persistent policy. China will seriously implement its international obligations and actively work with other countries and international organizations.
